541 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Interlude - SB 611
Location: Engineering
Timeline: Current

ON:

Kyle was exploring the Warden. His bunk was usable, although had the typical feel of a cardassian ship, all metal with knee knockes and odd angles. He had removed his typical red leather jacket, showing a blue shirt and bleach cream trousers.

He had then set about exploring the Mess, and the Kitchen, the rest of the ship. She was an old boat, full of holes and odd ends. But she was well built, and would probably outlive him, if he flew her properly.

He eventually made it to the heart of the ship, to engineering. As he descended the stairs he suddenly heard yelling from down bellow.

"I don't care what you had to go through to get it! 19 bars is what we agreed upon, not a strip more! I want you and the equipment on the dock by 1900 hours, see you then." Jan yelled, cutting the comm-link with a push of a button on his jacket sleeve.

The metal staircase creaked as Kyle walked down them, alerting Jan.

"Huh? Someone in here?" Jan said.

Kyle had his hands up as he came down the stairs, spotting the engineer as he came down "Sorry to disturb, just exploring the ship" He reached the bottom of the stairs, holding out his one hand, "Kyle Bowman, the new pilot."

Jan shook the man's hand for a moment. "Jan Valentine, engineer. New pilot eh? Well, you'll like what I have coming aboard soon. I'll need your help with calibrations and such when it gets here" Jan said.

Kyle gave a smile "I'm sure I will, any hint on what it is?"

"Well, most of it won't interest you, odds and ends and such, but..." Jan started, pulling out a data pad and handing it to Kyle.

"This will, a Klingon Groumal variant pilot's console. Better laid out and more responsive than that Bajoran piece of shit." Jan said

Kyle took the padd, looking over the specs for the new helm, smiling as a fellow crew member thought similar thoughts on this matter "Great, when are we getting hold of it?" He asked.

"Later this evening, around 2300 hours. Paid for all the new parts out of my pocket. If I'm gonna be on this ship, I better be able to count on the crap holding it together." Jan said.

"Glad to hear it" He looked around the engine room "You’ve done well in here. I was personally surprised we didn't all die as we came out of warp earlier."

"Me too. There was a power spike, but I routed it through the power couplings, burned a few out....but at least we'll have new ones soon." Jan said.

"I'll try and be more careful next time." Kyle gave a rueful smile, "Anyway, if you need a hand let me know, I'm pretty good with engines too."

"I'll let you know." Jan said, glancing at the chronometer on his wrist. "Ah, shit, I gotta run, I'm meeting someone soon at a bar." Jan said, hurrying up the stairs.

Kyle gave a mock salute as the engineer left. He then took stock as he realised he was the only one left in the carnivorous engine room. He hurried out before he broke something.
